Top 10 Mustang Colors of All Time

Since the very first Mustang, Ford has offered subtle shades, outrageously bright colors, and everything in between. In the 50+ years the Mustang has been in production, we've seen hundreds of colors. Narrowing down every single Mustang paint color from history into a list of the best isn’t easy. Still, we’ve picked ten of our favorites that stand out from the rest.

Poppy Red

"Classic" is the word that people think of when they see a Poppy Red Mustang. Available only on 1964.5 and 1965 models, it's emblematic of the Mustang’s debut. Sporty and vibrant, it’s only matched by Rangoon Red in terms of bright reds for the original Mustang. Poppy Red has an orange tinge that really makes it pop.

Azure Blue

Available only on the 2003 and 2004 Mach 1, Azure Blue is popular for its stunning shade and rarity. It also stands out because it was used in a lot of Ford’s advertising at the time. The black stripes and hood scoop of the Mach 1 add excellent contrast.

Gotta Have It Green

Gotta Have It Green is a highlighter green, the shade of a bright lime. This makes it one of the most daring colors on our list. It can’t be mistaken for any other color, even from afar. It was only offered in 2013 and 2014, the last two model years of the S197 generation.

Lava Red

Lava Red is a unique color because of its depth. Almost appearing black in darker lights, this unique shade of red features a deep, dark red flake under sunlight that is hard to photograph. It’s a rare and underrated color that has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. It was only offered on the 2012 model year.

Emberglo

Another iconic color for the classic Mustang, Emberglo was a rare shade only offered in 1966. It wasn’t very common, but that only makes this unique orange even more special for Mustang owners.

Grabber Blue

Grabber Blue is one of the most famous Mustang colors, and certainly a fan favorite. It was used in 1969-1973, as well as 2010-2014 and 2017. We love that this retro color was brought back into the modern era. It’s a beautiful non-metallic sky blue that gets attention and highlights the body lines of the Mustang.

Ford has also offered Grabber Orange, Grabber Green, Grabber Yellow, and Grabber Lime. Each of these bright colors is beautiful in its own right, but Grabber Blue stands out from the rest.

Competition Orange

To date, this color has only been offered on four model years of the Mustang: 2004, 2012, 2015, and 2016. It debuted with the last year of the New Edge Mustang. In 2012, Competition Orange was offered again, but only as a special color for the Boss 302. After finally listening to fans clamoring for “Comp Orange,” Ford offered it on all S550 trims in 2015 and 2016.

Kona Blue

Offered originally from 2010-2012 as a standard color across all models, Kona Blue quickly became a fan favorite. Unfortunately, it was replaced in 2013 by Deep Impact Blue, which features more of a purple hue.

In 2015, Ford launched the special 50th Anniversary Mustang with Kona Blue and Wimbledon White as the two colors. It returned for the 2018-2020 models, before disappearing once again. We’d bet that we haven’t seen the last of this modern classic.

Mystic & Mystichrome

There are some Mustang fans out there that would consider Mystic and Mystichrome to be the best Mustang color. Both colors are among the most unique ever offered on any factory vehicle. This makes them highly sought after among many enthusiasts.

These colors feature the addition of a special pigment in the paint which allows for a color-shifting appearance as light bounces off the surface. Again, photos truly don’t capture the cool-factor when it comes to both Mystic (available on 1996 SVT Cobras) and Mystichrome (available on 2004 SVT Cobras).

Wimbledon White

Wimbledon White is possibly one of the most classic and iconic colors ever used on the Mustang. It debuted in 1964.5 and was available until the end of the first generation in 1973. It was also the only color available on the iconic GT350. A creamy eggshell white, it looks perfect with deep blue stripes.

Wimbledon White made a special return for the 2015 50th Anniversary Mustang and even offered the color on the interior.
