Hurst is one of the original manufacturers of upgraded shifters for Mustangs, having been founded in 1958. Hurst was first based in near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and designed replacement aftermarket shifters for a huge variety of muscle cars throughout the 1960s, including the early Ford Mustangs. Hurst shifters are designed so well and were so preferred over competing brands that they became the industry standard for shifters in that era. Many manufacturers even offered Hurst shifters as standard or optional equipment, over their own in-house shifters.
In addition to their legendary shifters, Hurst was also a manufacturer of bumpers, engine mounts, wheels and shift knobs. Hurst was also the original developer of the "Jaws of Life," though they gave away the patent and allowed it to be manufactured by others. In 1970, Hurst was sold to new owners, primarily for the Hurst shifters, as most other products were discontinued. The company continued through several other owners and is now based in California, though they still remain a leader in shifters today.
